Brazil Program Overview

The Canada-Brazil Framework Agreement for Cooperation on Science, Technology and Innovation entered into force in both countries in 2010. The Agreement promotes greater collaboration in research and development in areas of mutual interest, including ocean technology, life sciences, information and communications technology, clean energy, green technologies, and nanotechnology. More broadly, it builds on Canada’s important commercial and political relations with Brazil to help boost collaborative research and development activities and lead to the commercialization of new ideas.

In support of these objectives, the Canada-Brazil Collaborative R&D Program managed by ISTPCanada strengthens Canada’s important economic relations with Brazil – the 10th largest economy in the world.

Leveraging investments from the Governments of Canada and Brazil, ISTPCanada and FAPESP (the São Paulo Research Foundation) launched the first Canada-Brazil Call for Proposals in 2009. The organizations shared a common goal: to inject critical funds into small- to-medium sized and established firms that aim to seize new global market opportunities, and conduct bilateral R&D.

Since August 2010, ISTPCanada has announced four new Canada-Brazil R&D projects and supported several partnership development activities (PDAs). Engaging dozens of companies across the two countries, these bilateral initiatives are stimulating joint R&D and business collaboration in life sciences, information and communications technologies and renewable energy.

ISTPCanada looks forward to announcing the next Canada-Brazil Call for Proposals in spring 2012.
